Electrical Certificate of Compliance
All home owners need to obtain an Electrical Certificate of Compliance (ECOC) to verify the electrical
work, including installations, done on a property. This document not only provides proof that electrical
work was done by a qualified professional, but it is also a requirement for insurance companies.
In the event that there is any damage to your property due to electricity, your insurance company will
require proof of your ECOC. Failure to do so may result in the insurance company repudiating the
claim. New legislation requires that a qualified electrician should inspect the property if the ECOC that
the seller has is older than two years, or if any electrical changes were made to the property during this
time. The buyer in turn, needs to obtain the original ECOC in the event that it is required by an
inspector or if the property is sold in the future.
